RESUMO

SUMMARY: The variations knowledge of the cerebral arterial circle (CAC) is relevant due to its influence on the development of ischemic encephalic disorders. Among these variations, when the external diameter of the posterior communicating artery exceeds the posterior cerebral artery caliber, we have a fetal conformation of this circle. The aim of this study was to describe the variations of the CAC in Chilean individuals and to know the type of arterial conformation. Thirty adult brains were used to measure lengths and caliber of the pre-communicating segments of the anterior (A1) and posterior (P1) cerebral arteries, and the anterior (ACoA) and posterior (PCoA) communicating arteries. The arterial conformation type was established, and the length and caliber of these vessels were compared according to the right or left side. It was observed that 76.6 % of the CACs presented aplasia and / or hypoplasia. Of its components, PCoA was hypoplasic in 53.3 %, appearing bilaterally in 40 % of the subjects. The comparison according to the side, indicated that the mean length of A1 and PCoA on the right side was slightly higher. In the case of caliber, the mean of A1, P1 and PCoA was higher on the left side. Regarding P1 and PcoA caliber, 33 % of the CACs presented unilateral fetal conformation. Regardless of the variability presented by the CAC, there is consensus that PCoA exhibits the greatest variability. The understanding of this variability requires an analysis of the embryonic aspects that can explain the fetal conformation of the CAC in the adult.

The high frequency dynamic behaviors of magnetic nanorings with variable anisotropy along their radius have been studied using micromagnetic simulations. The dynamic susceptibility spectrum and spatial localization of the ferromagnetic resonance modes are investigated by varying anisotropy gradients in nanorings of 200 nm of external radius, with different internal radii. Both the resonant frequencies and the number of peaks depend on the lower energy magnetization configuration which in turn is a function of anisotropy gradients. Besides, it is shown that the effects of the anisotropy gradient are relevant even for the narrowest ring of 10 nm wide. The idea of controlling frequencies by modifying the anisotropy gradients of the system suggests the possibility of using these nanostructures in potential magnetic controllable frequency devices.

SUMMARY: The extensor digitorum brevis muscle (EDB) is located along with the extensor hallucis brevis (EHD) in the dorsal region of the foot and are responsible for collaborating with the agonist action of the extensor digitorum longus muscles (EDL) and extensor hallucis longus (EHL) in the extension of the four medial fingers in the metatarsophalangeal joints. This complementary condition allows its surgical transfer to other receptor regions without affecting the extensor functionality of the toes, which is why during the last decades it has become an important tissue for the reconstruction of tissue injuries, however, there are few studies biometrics that describe it in detail. The objective of this investigation was to establish the length, width and area of extension of these muscles accompanied by the determination of their distances from the medial wedge and the base of the fifth metatarsal for surgical use. In addition to the above and after the description of the muscle variants found, the innervation motor points of these two muscles were determined. To do this, 36 formalized lower limbs of Brazilian adult individuals belonging to the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), Maceió, Brazil, were studied. Measurements were made with a 0.01 mm precision Mitutoyo caliper obtaining a length, width and area of 6.89 ± 1.64 cm, 3.81 ± 0.42 cm and 31.98 ± 7.60 cm2 on the right side of 6.91 ± 1.64 cm, 3.68 ± 0.46 cm and 30.75 ± 7.61 cm2 on the left, respectively. In 17 % of cases there is presence of accessory tendons for the EDB muscle. The distance from the medial margin of the EHB muscle with respect to the medial wedge and the lateral margin of the EDB muscle to the base of the fifth metatarsal was 1.97 ± 0.43 and 1.72 ± 0.41 on the right side and 2,01 ± 0.62 and 1.87 ± 0.36 on the left side respectively. Motor points (Pm) predominated in 64 % in the middle third of the EHB muscle and in 64 % in the proximal third of the EDB muscle. These results are a significant contribution both for those who perform orthopedic surgery and for detailed knowledge of the dorsal foot anatomy.

Biosimilars of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) have been routinely introduced into clinical practice. However, not functional genomics characterization has been performed yet in comparison with the innovator G-CSF. This study aimed to evaluate the transcriptomic changes in an in vitro model of umbilical cord blood cells (UBC) exposed to G-CSF for the identification of their modulated pathways. Umbilical cord blood cells-derived mononuclear cells (MNCs) were treated with biosimilar and innovator G-CSF for further gene expression profiling analysis using a microarray-based platform. Comparative analysis of biosimilar and innovator G-CSF gene expression signatures allowed us to identify the most commonly modulated pathways by both drugs. In brief, we observed predominantly upmodulation of transcripts related to PI3K-Akt, NF-kappaB, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathways as well as transcripts related to negative regulation of apoptotic process among others. In addition, hematopoietic colony-forming cell assays corroborate the G-CSF phenotypic effects over UBC-derived MNCs. In conclusion, our study suggests that G-CSF impacts UBC-derived cells through the modulation of several signaling pathways associated with cell survival, migration, and proliferation. The concordance observed between biosimilar and innovator G-CSF emphasizes their similarity in regards to their specificity and biological responses.

The Linea aspera located on the posterior margin of the femur diaphysis is considered a tomographic, imaging and anthropological reference. To the proximal epiphysis, this line is divided in several divergent lines. Of these, the lateral branch gives insertion to the gluteus maximus muscle (Tuberositas glutea), while the middle branch gives insertion to the pectineal muscle (pectinea line). Both structures are found in Terminologia Anatomica (TA), however the medial branch known as the Spiral Line, where the vastus medial muscle (VM) originates, is not found in TA. We aimed to collect, analyze and verify the level of use of the term Spiral line in terminologies, anatomy texts and scientific publications. Nomina Anatomica from Basilea (BNA), Paris Nomina Anatomica (PNA) y Terminologia anatomica FCAT (2001) and FIPAT (2011) were reviewed. In addition, 45 books and 20 articles in English and Spanish were also selected, in order to analyze text, tables and images of the femur and/or VM. Tables were made to summarize the information obtained. The term is not mentioned in payrolls or terminologies, however in the English column of TA, this term is used as a synonym for Linea pectinea. In some anatomical texts and scientific articles it is observed that the term spiral line is used in relation to the description of the femur and / or the origin of the vast medial. The use of the term in anatomy texts and scientific publications, for descriptive, anthropological and clinical purposes, added to the fact that within the principles of Anatomical Terminology Latin is the official language and should be considered a single name per term, in order to avoid confusion, they base the need to incorporate the term spiral line (Linea spiralis) into TA.

RESUMO

The ulnar and median nerves are widely distributed, innervating the muscles of the forearm and hand. In the latter, it also registers the sensitivity of a significant part of the skin. A series of communicating branches (CB) is described on the path of these nerves, including: 1) the Martin-Gruber communicating branch, 2) the Marinacci communicating branch, 3) the Riché-Cannieu communicating branch and 4) the Berrettini communicating branch. The aim of this study was to establish a correct denomination of these CB, using Latin and eliminating the use of eponyms. The exploratory study included books on anatomy and scientific articles that detailed the anatomical aspects of these CB. To these were added the terms that these branches presented in the various anatomical lists and terminologies. Each term proposal was done in Latin, using the corresponding gender, number and case. The CB between the median and ulnar nerves are described in anatomy texts as well as a plethora of publications. The prevalence rates of the CB range between 1.7 and 94 %; however, their inclusion in the anatomical terminologies has been limited. Based on the description of these branches and the presence of some of them in the existing terminologies, a proposal was prepared in line with the indications of the Federative International Programme on Anatomical Terminologies (FIPAT): 1) Ramus comunicans cum nervo ulnari, 2) Ramus comunicans cum nervo mediano, 3) Ramus communicans cum ramo profundo nervi ulnaris y 4) Ramus communicans cum nervo digitali palmari communi. Considering that terminologies are dynamic linguistic corpora, it is important to analyze constantly the incorporation of new terms that are in harmony with the scientific findings. The incorporation of new structures must follow FIPAT guidelines and include the grammatical aspects of Latin.

In this work two high density functional theory (DFT) correlation methodologies, the so called DFT+U (or GGA+U) implementation and the exact exchange of correlated electrons (EECE), hybrid DFT functional (or one case of hybrid DFT), are tested to determine the mechanical properties of americium-II. For each case, the numeric value of their principal parameter is chosen ([Formula: see text] for the first case and [Formula: see text] for the second one) once the crystalline structure meets all the mechanical stability conditions. The results show that there is a range of values of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in which both methodologies generate a stable (experimentally correct) non-magnetic ground state, reaching approximately the same numeric value of the set of elastic constants of the cubic structure. However, only for the case of the hybrid functional results it is possible to show how the non-magnetic configuration is energetically favored, as compared to the ferromagnetic configuration. This happens around [Formula: see text], a value in agreement with a previous analysis made under the same methodology for the metal case Am-I. Following a detailed and deep analysis, it is possible to find a close interrelation between the electronic properties of the metal: its distribution of states around the Fermi level, the energy difference between the two possible spin configurations, and the mechanical response of the crystal. Also, it is possible to conclude that the effect of alpha parameter on the [Formula: see text] electrons can be used as a parameter to simulate the presence of an external pressure over the structure. For the comparison, the calculations were performed within the LAPW approximation in DFT as implemented in the WIEN2k code, with a finite deformation method.

The main branch of the median nerve in the forearm is the anterior interosseous nerve (NIA), which innervates most of the muscles of the deep plane of the anterior compartment of the forearm. There are different descriptions about the point of origin and its course, which can determine a potential entrapment of it in its transit through the arcs formed in the heads of origin of the pronator round and flexor digitorum of the fingers muscles, as well as with regard to communicating branches of the NIA with other nerves of the forearm. The aim was to determine the point of origin, course, innervated muscles and presence of communicating branches of the NIA with other nerves of the forearm. 30 forearms of Brazilian adult corpses fixed in formalin belonging to the UNCISAL anatomy laboratory were used, Maceió, Brazil. The point of origin of the NIA reached an average of 46 mm with a standard deviation of 17.54 mm, distal to the biepicondilar line. In 37 % of the cases, this nerve originated in the existing section of the muscular arches mentioned and in 23 % it arose proximal to the location of these. In all cases, the NIA inervated the flexor digitorum profundus and pronator quadratus and 93 % also inervated the flexor pollicis longus. One case presented a communicating branch between the NIA and the ulnar nerve. In 10 % of the cases, he presented the variant muscle accessory head of the flexor pollicis longus. All these findings should be considered at the time of correctly diagnosing the different entrapment syndromes that affect both the NIA and the median nerve in the ulnar region and the forearm. Likewise, the success of surgical procedures in these regions is subject to a detailed knowledge of the course and distribution of these nerves.

Innervation of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle (FDS) is controversial. Several authors describe that the branches of this muscle arise independently or from a common trunk that comes from the median nerve, within the ulnar region. Other descriptions indicate the presence of additional branches in the middle and distal third of the forearm. These differences are also reflected when describing the motor points. The aim was to determine the number, location and distribution patterns of the branches for the FDS. 30 forearms of Brazilian adults were used. About the number of branches, 26 % presented a single branch (R1). 57 % presented two branches (R1 and R2) and 17 % presented 3 branches (R1, R2 and R3). Regarding the format of origin, 87 % of the R1 emerged independently, while 13 % emerged from a common trunk. In the case of R2 and R3, 100 % emerged independently. About the points of origin, 90 % of the R1 were originated in the proximal third of the forearm, while 60 % of the R2 emerged from the middle third, and of the 5 R3, 60 % were originated in the middle third and the remaining two emerged in the distal third. This same variability was present in the motor points distribution. Regarding the distribution patterns of these motor branches, two types were identified. Pattern I was present in 85 % and was characterized by all branches arising at a point distal to the origin of the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN), however, in the type II pattern (15 % of the sample), the first branch was originated proximal to the origin of the AIN.

RESUMO

The use of implants carries on a series of problems, among them infections, poor biocompatibility, high levels of cytotoxicity, and significant mechanical differences between implants and host organs that promote stress shielding effects. These problems indicate that the materials used to make implants must meet essential requirements and high standards for implantations to be successful. In this work, we present the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the antibiofilm, mechanical, and thermal properties, and cytotoxic effect of a nanocomposite-based scaffold on polyurethane (PU) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for soft tissue applications. The effect of the quantity of AuNPs on the antibacterial activity of nanocomposite scaffolds was evaluated against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Klebsiella spp., with a resulting 99.99% inhibition of both bacteria using a small quantity of nanoparticles. Cytotoxicity was evaluated with the T10 1/2 test against fibroblast cells. The results demonstrated that porous nanogold/PU scaffolds have no toxic effects on fibroblast cells to the 5 day exposition. With respect to mechanical properties, stress-strain curves showed that the compressive modulus and yield strength of PU scaffolds were significantly enhanced by AuNPs (by at least 10 times). This is due to changes in the arrangement of hard segments of PU, which increase the stiffness of the polymer. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the degradation onset temperature rises with an increase in the quantity of AuNPs. These properties and characteristics demonstrate that porous nanogold/PU scaffolds are suitable material for use in soft tissue implants.

RESUMO

We investigate the dependence of the Néel skyrmion size and stability on perpendicular magnetic field in ultrathin circular magnetic dots with out-of-plane anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction. Our results show the existence of two distinct dependencies of the skyrmion radius on the applied field and dot size. In the case of skyrmions stable at zero field, their radius strongly increases with the field applied parallel to the skyrmion core until skyrmion reaches the metastability region and this dependence slows down. More common metastable skyrmions demonstrate a weaker increase of their size as a function of the field until some critical field value at which these skyrmions drastically increase in size showing a hysteretic behavior with coexistence of small and large radius skyrmions and small energy barriers between them. The first case is also characterized by a strong dependence of the skyrmion radius on the dot diameter, while in the second case this dependence is very weak.

RESUMO

In the present work, we report on the synthesis of peptide functionalized magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles in a simple microfluidic platform. Superparamagnetic nanoparticles and gold nanorods were selected for this study. Magnetic nanoparticles were functionalized with peptide D1, which can bind selectively to toxic aggregates of the ß-amyloid peptide associated with Alzheimer's disease. Gold nanorods were functionalized with chitosan replacing the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide to reduce the cytotoxic effect. The selected microfluidic strategy yields structures with plasmonic and magnetic properties in a nanostructure. Cytotoxic assays with SH-SY5Y cells demonstrate that nanoparticles obtained by microfluidics do not affect cell viability at the studied concentrations. Additionally, these magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles inhibit fibril formation demonstrating that the magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles obtained by microfluidics could be applied for a potential treatment and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

RESUMO

Purpose. Hypoxia has predictive value in head and neck cancer (HNC). It has been well described, albeit in a small number of clinical Centres. The aim of this study was to describe our experience using the polarographic probe technique to assess the predictive value of tumour oxygenation in patients with advanced HNC treated with hyperfractionated radio-chemotherapy. Hypoxia modification was induced using percutaneous spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Methods/patients. Male patients (n = 12; stage IVb n = 8; IVa n = 4; mean age 58: range 46-70 years) with advanced HNC were evaluated. Planned therapy was hyperfractionated-radiotherapy, oral tegafur (precursor of 5-fluorouracil) and hypoxia modification using SCS. Pre-treatment analyses included: haemoglobin levels and tumour oxygenation (using the Eppendorf polarographic probe device). Oxygenation was expressed as median-pO2 (in mmHg) and hypoxia as the percentage of pO2 values ≤5 mmHg (HP5) and ≤2.5 mmHg (HP2.5). Results. Lower haemoglobin levels were directly correlated with median pO2 (p = 0.017) and inversely correlated with HP5 (p = 0.020) and more advanced stages (IVb vs. IVa; p = 0.028). Patients who subsequently developed systemic metastasis had tumours that were more hypoxic, with lower median pO2 (p = 0.036) and higher HP5 (p = 0.036). The subgroup of patients with HP2.5 above the median (the most hypoxic tumours) had lower loco-regional control (p = 0.027), cause-specific survival (p = 0.008), and overall survival (p = 0.008). Conclusions. Higher tumour hypoxia showed predictive value in HNC in our study, and was significantly associated with lower overall survival, cause-specific survival, and loco-regional control. Tumour hypoxia determination could be used to select patients who would most benefit by hypoxia modification during chemo-radiotherapy of HNC (AU)

RESUMO

The zero-temperature, classical XY model on an L×L square lattice is studied by exploring the distribution Φ_{L}(y) of its centered and normalized magnetization y in the large-L limit. An integral representation of the cumulant generating function, known from earlier works, is used for the numerical evaluation of Φ_{L}(y), and the limit distribution Φ_{L→∞}(y)=Φ_{0}(y) is obtained with high precision. The two leading finite-size corrections Φ_{L}(y)-Φ_{0}(y)≈a_{1}(L)Φ_{1}(y)+a_{2}(L)Φ_{2}(y) are also extracted both from numerics and from analytic calculations. We find that the amplitude a_{1}(L) scales as ln(L/L_{0})/L^{2} and the shape correction function Φ_{1}(y) can be expressed through the low-order derivatives of the limit distribution, Φ_{1}(y)=[yΦ_{0}(y)+Φ_{0}^{'}(y)]^{'}. Thus, Φ_{1}(y) carries the same universal features as the limit distribution and can be used for consistency checks of universality claims based on finite-size systems. The second finite-size correction has an amplitude a_{2}(L)∝1/L^{2} and one finds that a_{2}Φ_{2}(y)≪a_{1}Φ_{1}(y) already for small system size (L>10). We illustrate the feasibility of observing the calculated finite-size corrections by performing simulations of the XY model at low temperatures, including T=0.

The median nerve is responsible for the innervation of the muscles of the superficial layer of the anterior compartment of the forearm, it originates along its course in the arm and forearm, branches to these muscles. Some branches originated from common trunks (Ct). We studied 30 upper limbs of Brazilian adults corpses, fixed in 10 % formaldehyde in order to obtain an anatomical and biometric description of the origin and distribution of the branches of the median nerve in the superficial muscles of the forearm: pronator teres (Pt), palmaris longus (PL), flexor carpi radialis (FCR), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and classify these branches (Br) according to their origin. We performed dissections and recorded origins in relation to the biepicondilar line (BEL). With the results we obtained a classification of the branches to the muscles of the superficial layer of the anterior compartment in 4 patterns (I, II, III, IV; the I classified in IA and IB), including the origin of anterior interosseous nerve (AIN). In the pattern IA (29 %), branches originated from proximal to distal in the following sequence: CtPT, PL, FCR, AIN, Br1FDS, Br2FDS; in pattern IB (41 %) showed CtPt, TcFCR and PL, AIN, Br1FDS, Br2FDS; in pattern II (4 %) was CtPt and FCR, PL, AIN, Br1FDS, Br2FDS, Br3FDS; in pattern III (11 %) it was CtPt, Ct FCR and PL, AIN, Br1FDS, Br2FDS, Br3FDS and in pattern IV (15 %) was Br1Pt, Br2Pt, CtFCR and PL, Br1FDS, AIN, Br2FDS. In type pattern IB, the first muscle to receive branches from the median nerve in the forearm was the PT, which in 53 % of cases originated from a common trunk. The PL was the second to be innervated, leaving third place to FCR, which 50 % were supplied by a common trunk. The latest to be innervated muscle was the FDS, which received two branches in 57 % of cases. The results are a contribution to the knowledge of the innervation of the muscles of the superficial layer of the anterior compartment of the forearm.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether circulating CD4+CD28null and extra-thymic CD4+CD8+ double positive (DP) T cells are independently associated with damage accrual in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2013 and April 2014 in consecutive SLE patients from our Rheumatology Department. CD4+CD28null and CD4+CD8+ DP T-cell frequencies were analyzed by flow-cytometry. The association of damage (SLICC/ACR Damage Index, SDI) and CD4+CD28null and CD4+CD8+ DP T cells was examined by univariable and multivariable Poisson regression models, adjusting for possible confounders. All analyses were performed using SPSS 21.0. RESULTS: Patients' (n = 133) mean (SD) age at diagnosis was 35.5 (16.8) years, 124 (93.2%) were female; all were mestizo (mixed Caucasian and Amerindian ancestry). Disease duration was 7.4 (6.8) years. The SLE Disease Activity Index was 5.5 (4.2), and the SDI 0.9 (1.2). The percentages of CD4+CD28null and CD4+CD8+ DP T cells were 17.1 (14.4) and 0.4 (1.4), respectively. The percentage of CD4+CD28null and CD4+CD8+ DP T cells were positively associated with a higher SDI in both univariable (rate ratio (RR) 1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.03 and 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07-1.27, respectively; p < 0.001 for both) and multivariable analyses RR 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01-1.03, p = 0.001 for CD4+CD28null T cells and 1.28, 95% CI: 1.13-1.44, p < 0.001 for CD4+CD8+ DP T cells). Only the renal domain remained associated with CD4+CD28null in multivariable analyses (RR 1.023 (1.002-1.045); p = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: In SLE patients, CD4+CD28null and CD4+CD8+ DP T cells are independently associated with disease damage. Longitudinal studies are warranted to determine the predictive value of these associations.

Intense muscle activity of the forearm generates the need to describe the possible sites of compression of the peripheral nerves of the upper limb. For the median nerve one of the most prevalent sites of nerve entrapment is when the nerve travels within the carpal tunnel. To this we must add the potential compression of the nerve when it passes through the heads of the pronator teres muscle (PT). This compression is characterized by paresis of the wrist flexor muscles or some of the thenar, signs which can add to numbness and pain in the hand. The aim of this study was to describe the relation of the median nerve with the PT muscle. Thirty formolized forearms of adult Brazilian individuals were used. It was found that in 40% of cases the median nerve crossed the ulnar head PT muscle. In one case the ulnar head was absent. Due to this, the median nerve passed posterior to the humeral head of this muscle. The clinic that develops from compression syndrome at this level is directly linked to the distribution of the branches that the nerve presents proximal to the site of compression. Associated with these findings, it is vital for optimal diagnosis of the compression of median nerve to rule out compression of this nerve in proximal sites to the carpal tunnel.
